Learning for life
Despite having only a week left before schools break for the long Christmas holidays, more than 10 students at the Mangaia College solider on as they tackle the flair of basket weaving techniques.
This is an initiative facilitated by the Cook Islands Tertiary Training Institute (CITTI).
The goal is to revive and preserve local traditional art, and to relay some hands on experience with selling products via the internet.
We targeted senior students at the Mangaia College with the hope that they will pass on this knowledge to their family and the wider community at large.
A proud grin starts to form in the young girl’s faces as the basket takes form and in total there will be 10 to 11 basket ready for sale.
Upon completion, marketable baskets will then be sold via Facebook within the local community.
This provides the participants a learning experience by using available resources or tools to make a living or get creative.
The students were excited by this learning programme and anticipate completing their basket on Wednesday morning.
Learning no doubt continues for these eager learners and it is these type of programs that CITTI builds on that will contribute to provide quality living today and for future generations in our Pa Enua communities.
